Compare the top funeral plans in the UK

Choosing a funeral plan is a deeply personal decision, and the right one depends on more than price. This guide compares the UK's leading providers on the things that matter most, so you can plan ahead with confidence.

Best funeral plan provider and award logos

Quick answer: there’s no single “best funeral plan” for everyone, but Pure Cremation is the UK’s most-reviewed provider and the only one on this page to combine all-inclusive pricing, its own crematoria, a solid wood coffin, ashes in a proper urn and a reinsured trust fund as standard. Below, we compare it against 11 other UK funeral plan providers on the details that matter most: what’s included, who performs the cremation, and what happens to the ashes.

But with so many providers to choose from, each claiming to be the best, comparing funeral plans can feel overwhelming. This guide compares the UK's leading funeral plan and pre-paid cremation providers, side by side, on the things that matter most, such as, what's genuinely included, who performs the cremation, and what happens to your ashes.

Still deciding between a pure cremation, direct cremation, or traditional funeral? Our guide to types of funerals explained compares them side by side.

    Why compare funeral plans?

Not all funeral plans are equal. The headline price is just the starting point. When you compare funeral plans, the details matter far more:

    • Does the price include everything? Some plans advertise a low headline price, then charge extra for things like a longer collection distance, an out-of-hours collection, or a larger coffin. Those extras can add hundreds of pounds to what your family pays, even though you planned and paid ahead.

    • Does the provider perform the cremation itself? Not every funeral plan provider owns crematoria or employs the team who carries out the cremation. Many outsource this to a third party, so the company you speak to may not be the company that actually looks after your loved one.

    • How is your money protected? UK funeral plan providers must, by law, hold your money in a trust or an insurance-backed policy. But the level of protection still varies: some trusts are reinsured for extra security, and providers differ in how openly they explain this.

    • What happens to the ashes? Ashes might be returned in a proper urn, or in a basic cardboard or plastic container. They might be hand-delivered to your family's home, sent by courier, or something your family has to collect in person. It's worth knowing which, before you choose.

We've answered these questions, provider by provider, below, starting with a quick side-by-side comparison table.

    Compare Pure Cremation

Pure Cremation is the UK's most trusted funeral plan provider, with over 40,000 combined 5* reviews across Trustpilot, Reviews.io and Google, tens of thousands more than any other provider. Additionally, Pure Cremation is Britain’s bestselling funeral plan according to research estimated by Mintel in 2025. It's the only provider on this page to include all of the following:

    1. All-inclusive pricing — the Pure Price Promise means everything you need is included, with no extra costs and no surprises for your family.

    2. Own crematoria — Pure Cremation owns three state-of-the-art crematoria across England and Wales, and carries out collection, care, cremation and the return of ashes. Collection is included anywhere across mainland Britain at no extra charge, and the person in our care rests in a climate-controlled mortuary. In Scotland, Pure Cremation works with trusted partner crematoria.

    3. Solid wood coffin — not a veneer or chipboard coffin. Everyone in Pure's care has their own solid wood (usually cedar) coffin from FSC-certified, sustainably managed forests.

    4. Ashes returned in a proper urn — returned to your family personally, by hand, in a biodegradable urn which can be kept or buried.

    5. Ceramic identification disc — the only one of the providers compared here that includes a unique ceramic disc, engraved with the national cremation reference, with every cremation, guaranteeing the identity of the ashes.

    6. Reinsured trust fund — your plan money is held in an independent trust, reinsured with Munich Re, the world's largest reinsurer. No other provider compared here takes this extra step.

Pure Cremation is FCA-regulated and offers FSCS protection. The plan covers nationwide collection from mainland England, Wales and Scotland, including the Isle of Skye.

Additionally, Pure Cremation was named Best Funeral Plan Provider at the Personal Finance Awards for two years running, 2024/25 and 2025/26, and holds a UK Customer Experience Award (UKCXA) badge.

In terms of customer ratings, Pure Cremation holds 31,600 five-star reviews on Trustpilot (a 4.8 out of 5 average), over 7,500 five-star reviews on Reviews.io (a 4.9 out of 5 average), and over 800 five-star reviews on Google (a 4.6 out of 5 average).

What's not included: a ceremony at the crematorium, hearse, flowers, or a celebrant. But families are free to hold a memorial, celebration of life, or any send-off they choose, wherever and whenever feels right.

    Compare Co-op Funeralcare

Co-op Funeralcare is one of the UK's most recognisable funeral providers. It offers both direct cremation and traditional attended funeral plans, with a network of funeral homes across the country. Co-op doesn't own or operate any crematoria, having sold its crematoria portfolio to Dignity in 2016. Cremations are now carried out through a network of more than 40 regional partner crematoria, primarily via Westerleigh, and allocated by Co-op rather than chosen by the family. Because cremations are outsourced, Co-op does not oversee the full process directly.

The Direct Cremation Plan includes collection within a 50-mile radius, with no extra charge for out-of-hours collection, pacemaker removal, or an oversized coffin. It doesn't include a solid wood coffin (Co-op uses a wood-effect veneer as standard) or a proper urn: ashes are returned in a biodegradable cardboard box, which the family collects in person, either from the crematorium or a Co-op funeral home, or has scattered there. Hand delivery to the family's own home isn't offered.

On Trustpilot, Co-op holds a 4.7 rating from approximately 6,000 reviews. Fairer Finance rates its prepaid direct cremation plan 3 out of 5 stars.

    Compare Aura Funerals

Aura is a newer, digital-first funeral plan provider that sells both direct cremation and attended cremation plans. It doesn't own or operate any crematoria or funeral premises itself, working instead through a mixed network of partner sites, including Dignity-owned crematoria and local authority sites such as Cottingley Hall in Leeds, so which crematorium is used, and who ultimately performs it, depends on where the family lives.

For plan holders, Aura includes collection at no extra charge regardless of distance or time of day, along with pacemaker removal, an oversized coffin, and hand delivery of ashes; some of these carry a fee if arranged without a plan in place. Its standard coffin is a wood-effect veneer rather than solid wood, and ashes are returned in a biodegradable scatter tube rather than a proper urn. Plan money is held in an independently managed trust, though unlike Pure Cremation's, it isn't reinsured.

On Trustpilot, Aura holds a 4.9 rating from around 1,400 reviews.

    Compare Simplicity Cremations

Simplicity Cremations is a specialist direct-cremation brand owned by Dignity, the same group behind Dignity Funerals, and traces back to a company first incorporated in 1894. Unlike most other providers on this page, Simplicity performs cremations itself, using Dignity's own network of 45 owned crematoria alongside 585 funeral director branches across mainland Great Britain.

Collection is included from anywhere in mainland Great Britain, and pacemaker removal is covered as standard. Simplicity's coffin is a wood-effect composite rather than solid wood, and ashes are returned in a simple cardboard container, though hand delivery is included in the plan price.

On Trustpilot, Simplicity holds a strong 4.8 rating, though from a notably small and still-growing review base of around 550 reviews.

    Compare Golden Leaves

Golden Leaves is a family-run, independent funeral plan provider, founded in 1985 with roots in a funeral tradition dating back to 1875. It's one of the UK's longer-standing providers, and, following its acquisition of Avalon Funeral Plans in late 2025, now one of the largest independent pre-paid funeral plan companies in the UK.

Golden Leaves owns no crematoria and works entirely through a network of independent funeral directors: a director is nominated shortly after purchase, and the family isn't offered a choice of crematorium. Because cremations are outsourced, Golden Leaves does not oversee the full process directly. Its entry-level Copper Plan includes 24-hour collection and pacemaker removal at no extra cost, though collection beyond 25 miles and an oversized coffin both carry additional charges.

The coffin supplied is chipboard with a wood-effect veneer finish rather than solid wood. Ashes are returned in a plastic bag inside a cardboard box, roughly the size of a shoebox, rather than a proper urn; families who want an urn have to arrange and pay for one separately through the funeral director. Ashes are hand-delivered as standard.

    Compare Funerals With Grace

Funerals With Grace (previously Plan with Grace) is a standalone, FCA-regulated funeral plan provider founded in 2015. It sells plans through a nationwide network of independent funeral directors rather than through any premises of its own.

Funerals With Grace owns no crematoria or branches: it works through a nationwide network of independent, vetted funeral directors, with collection, mortuary care and cremation all carried out by whichever local director is assigned to the case, rather than a single named partner. Because that funeral director carries out the cremation rather than Funerals With Grace itself, it doesn't oversee the full process directly.

Collection is included at no extra charge, including out-of-hours and non-hospital collection, but pacemaker removal costs £100 and an oversized coffin costs £300. Its standard coffin is a wood-effect composite rather than solid wood, and ashes are returned in a cardboard eco box, with the ashes bagged inside, rather than a proper urn, hand-delivered by the assigned funeral director's own driver as part of the plan price. Families who want a scatter tube or a proper urn instead can upgrade, but this has to be arranged and paid for separately.

On Trustpilot, Funerals With Grace holds a 4.8 rating, however with under 500 reviews, independent customer feedback is more limited than with larger providers.

    Compare Avalon Funeral Plans

Avalon has been trading as a funeral plan provider since 1993, one of the longer-established names in the market, and was acquired by Golden Leaves in October 2025, alongside which it continues to operate as a separate regulated entity with its own trust.

Avalon is a plan-seller only: it owns no crematoria, mortuaries or branches, and allocates each plan to one of more than 1,800 appointed local funeral directors, who deliver the actual service. The family doesn't choose which director or crematorium is used. Because cremations are outsourced, Avalon does not oversee the full process directly. Collection is included at no extra charge regardless of distance or time of day, and pacemaker removal is covered as standard, but an oversized coffin isn't included and is charged separately at the time of need.

Avalon's coffin is a wood-effect design rather than solid wood, and ashes are returned in a cardboard box rather than a proper urn, hand-delivered to the family at no extra cost.

On Trustpilot, Avalon holds a strong 4.9 rating from around 4,400 reviews, one of the larger review bases among the providers on this page. Avalon previously held the Best Funeral Plan Provider award at the Personal Finance Awards from 2019 to 2023, before Pure Cremation took the title for 2024/25 and 2025/26.

    Compare Dignity Funerals

Dignity Funerals is one of the oldest funeral businesses covered here: the same legal entity, Dignity Funerals Limited, has traded since 1894, and is also the parent behind Simplicity Cremations. It sells several plan tiers, from an unattended Direct Cremation plan through to fully attended options.

Dignity owns and operates 46 crematoria alongside a network of more than 500 funeral director branches, and performs cremations itself rather than through a third party. Collection is included from anywhere within 50 miles at no extra charge, including out-of-hours collection, but removal of a pacemaker or other medical device is charged separately, and an oversized coffin is priced on request rather than included as standard. The standard coffin is a wood-effect design, with paid upgrades available including biodegradable options such as cardboard, bamboo and willow.

Ashes are returned in a simple cardboard container rather than a proper urn, delivered to the family within 20 miles of the crematorium at no extra cost; there's no urn upgrade available through Dignity itself, so families who want one have to arrange and pay for it separately through their nominated funeral director.

On Trustpilot, Dignity holds a 4.8 rating from around 3,800 reviews. Fairer Finance rates its prepaid direct cremation plan just 1 out of 5 stars, notably lower than most other providers on this page.

    Compare Golden Charter

Golden Charter is one of the UK's older funeral plan companies, founded in 1990, and sells its plans exclusively through a network of around 3,000 independent funeral directors who belong to SAIFCharter, a trade body whose members are only permitted to sell Golden Charter plans.

Golden Charter owns no crematoria, mortuaries or funeral homes. Every part of the service, from collection through to cremation, is subcontracted to whichever local funeral director is chosen or allocated, so Golden Charter doesn't oversee the process directly. Its Direct Cremation Plan includes collection within a 25-mile radius during working hours, though an oversized coffin costs extra, and the standard coffin supplied is wood-effect rather than solid wood.

Ashes are typically returned in a simple cardboard box rather than a proper urn; the exact container varies by crematorium, since which one is used depends on the appointed funeral director rather than being set by Golden Charter itself. Ashes are held by the local funeral director who carried out the cremation, not sent by courier or delivered by Golden Charter itself, and the family can either collect them in person or have them scattered in the garden of remembrance.

On Trustpilot, Golden Charter holds a 4-star rating from around 3,000 reviews. Fairer Finance rates its Direct Cremation Plan just 1 out of 5 stars, and it holds 3.4 out of 5 on Google from a smaller base of 92 reviews.

    Compare Memoria

Memoria is a full-service group founded in 2003, combining its own crematoria network with a separate arm that sells prepaid funeral plans. It's one of the few providers on this page that both owns crematoria and performs the majority of cremations itself: around 84% of its direct cremations take place at one of its 11 owned crematoria and memorial parks, with the remainder handled by a vetted partner where a Memoria site isn't practical.

Its Direct Cremation Plan includes collection within a 15-mile radius of the funeral director, beyond which mileage is charged at £1 a mile, and both pacemaker removal and an oversized coffin are included as standard. The coffin supplied is an oak-effect design rather than solid wood, but ashes are returned in a biodegradable cardboard box, hand-delivered as part of the plan.

Unlike most providers on this page, including Pure Cremation, which hold plan money in a trust, Memoria protects its plan money through a whole-of-life insurance policy with an FCA-regulated insurer, a different but equally regulated approach.

Memoria's reputation is strong across the board: a 5-star rating from around 4,200 reviews on Trustpilot, 4.9 from around 4,300 on Reviews.io, and a 5-star Fairer Finance rating for its Direct Cremation Plan, held for two years running.

    Compare Distinct Cremations

Distinct Cremations was set up in 2021, notably younger than most other providers here, and operates as part of the Westerleigh Group, an independent crematoria and cemeteries operator.

Because Distinct's parent group owns the 42 crematoria used, cremations largely take place in-house rather than through a separate third party, though the family isn't offered a choice of site for the unattended plan. Collection is included from anywhere in mainland Great Britain with no distance limit, and out-of-hours collection, pacemaker removal and an oversized coffin are all included as standard.

Its coffin is a wood veneer design rather than solid wood. Ashes are returned in a biodegradable cardboard container rather than a proper urn, though hand delivery within 14 days is included as part of the plan.

On Trustpilot, Distinct holds a 4.9 rating from around 340 reviews, a small but fast-growing base. Fairer Finance rates its plan 3 out of 5 stars.

    Compare Celebration of Life

Celebration of Life is a small, independent specialist based in Southampton, founded in 2019, focused solely on direct cremation.

It handles collection, mortuary care and the return of ashes using its own staff and vehicles, but outsources the cremation itself to a partner crematorium, which may not necessarily be local to the family. Its plan is marketed as fully inclusive, covering out-of-hours collection, pacemaker removal, an oversized coffin and the return of ashes at no extra cost, though it retains around half of the plan price for its own costs before the remainder reaches its trust.

Its coffin is made from MDF rather than solid wood, and ashes are returned in a biodegradable scatter pod rather than a proper urn, hand-delivered by its own team. On Trustpilot, Celebration of Life holds a 4.9 rating from around 170 reviews, a small review base compared to most other providers here. It was rated the highest-scoring direct cremation plan by Fairer Finance in 2026.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the best funeral plan in the UK?

The best funeral plan for you depends on what matters most: price, who performs the cremation, and what happens to the ashes.

Pure Cremation is the UK's most-reviewed provider and the only plan on this page to combine all-inclusive pricing, its own crematoria, a solid wood coffin and a reinsured trust fund as standard, which is why it has held the Best Funeral Plan Provider award for two years running. Compare the full details in the table above to find the right plan for your family.

How do you compare funeral plans?

Compare funeral plans on five things:

    1. what's genuinely included in the price (no hidden extras);

    2. who performs the cremation — the provider itself, or a third party;

    3. how your money is protected — a reinsured trust, a standard trust, or an insurance-backed policy;

    4. what happens to the ashes — the container, and whether they're delivered to your home; and

    5. independent reviews and ratings.

Are funds protected in funeral plans?

Yes — all funeral plan providers regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) must protect your money, either in a trust fund or through an insurance-backed arrangement. This regulation came into force in 2022 and significantly strengthened consumer protection in the funeral plan market.

However, the level of protection can vary. Some providers go further than others. Pure Cremation, for example, holds plan funds in an independently managed trust and reinsures that trust with Munich Re — the world's largest reinsurer. This provides an additional layer of security that we're not aware of any other funeral plan provider offering. All FCA-regulated plans also come with Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) protection.

When comparing providers, it's worth asking specifically how your money is held and what happens to it if the company were to cease trading.

What should a funeral plan include?

A good funeral plan should cover everything needed for a dignified cremation, with no hidden extras for your family to pay. At a minimum, look for:

    • Collection of the deceased from home, hospital, or care home (and check if there are distance limits or out-of-hours charges)
    • Transfer to the crematorium
    • A coffin (and check whether it's solid wood or a cheaper veneer)
    • The cremation itself
    • Return of the ashes — and check what they're returned in (a proper urn or a cardboard container) and whether they're delivered personally
    • Pacemaker removal (which is required by law before cremation)
    • Jewellery return

Some providers include all of these as standard. Others treat several as optional extras. Our guide to what to expect with a funeral plan explains what Pure Cremation includes in full.

What are the pitfalls of funeral plans?

Funeral plans can offer real peace of mind, but there are a few things to watch out for:

Hidden extras. The headline price isn't always the total cost. Check for charges like out-of-hours collection fees, costs to return ashes, pacemaker removal charges, or fees for oversized coffins.

Outsourced services. Some plan providers don't carry out the funeral themselves — they sell the plan and then outsource the cremation to a third party. This can affect standards of care and means a company you didn't choose may handle the service.

Non-fixed pricing. Some plans (like Avalon's contribution-based model) provide an allowance rather than a guaranteed price. If funeral costs rise significantly, the allowance may not cover the full amount.

Instalment payments. If you pay by monthly instalments and fall behind with payments, or die before reaching a qualifying period, there may be additional costs for your family to cover.

Regulatory status. Always check the provider is FCA-regulated. You can verify this at the FCA register.

All pricing and service information is correct as of September 2026 and based on publicly available provider information and our own research. We recommend verifying details directly with each provider before making a decision, as plans and pricing change.

Pure Cremation Funeral Planning Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 965260). Registered in England and Wales No. 09906976.
