Each person is given a unique ceramic disc that survives the cremation and guarantees the identity of their ashes. Where to register a death in London

For deaths within the city of London, you will register at London has 33 borough register offices. Deaths are registered at the office for the borough where the death occurred. Islington and London City Register Office is at Islington Town Hall, Upper St, London N1 2UD. Westminster Register Office is at 317 Harrow Rd, London W9 3RJ.

If your loved one lived in a surrounding borough, you will usually register at their local office instead — for example, from Southwark and Camden to Tower Hamlets and Wandsworth — visit your borough council's website to find your local office and book an appointment. If your loved one died away from home, you can register in the district where they died, or make a declaration at another office.

In England and Wales, a death must be registered within 5 days at the register office for the district where the death occurred. In Scotland, you have 8 days. You can find your local register office through your local council website.

Pure cremation vs. direct cremation: The important differences

In recent years, many providers have begun to offer what they call a “direct cremation”. A pure cremation and a direct cremation sound similar, but in practice, they can be very different.

With many direct cremation services, you are actually going through a funeral director, so you still pay a funeral director’s fee. Coffins are often low-cost veneer with plastic handles, ashes are commonly returned in a cardboard “temporary container”, and because some providers don’t own their own crematoria, your loved one may be passed on to a third party.
